Bitrate Setting

Bean

The options are:
Max
High
Default

Is the "Default" setting higher or lower then the "High" setting?
I assume these are all variable rate but making displaying the max rates these will do in the dialog would help.

Answered my own question..

"Default" is lower then "High" and "Max".

Default is roughly 8MB/sec
High is around 10MB/sec
Max is over 14MB/sec

To put that into perspective, the original ContourHD did around 5MB/sec and VholdR maybe 2MB/sec tops.

I'd like to highlight the fact that the BASE Jump sample MOV file on the site is only 6MB/sec (I haven't tried the others). So the samples may not be a good indication that your computer can handle the rates put out by the ContourHD1080p.

Now just because you can't play the video doesn't mean you can't upload/edit it. If your editing it you'll likely re-encode it to a lower bitrate that your computer can handle (depending on what your using the video for). Uploading to the vholdr.com also downsizes the file. So I don't want to discourage anyone from getting the camera. Just pointing out that the file coming directly off your SD Card might be more then your computer can chew.

Can you answer why you would want to change the settings? I would reckon the higher you set it to the more space it would eat up on the card per record time?

more data= more quality= bigger smile ;-)

...as well as bigger file size & more load on the machine playing it.

I think Default is VBR, i know that Contour was (i will be referring the 1080p version as contourHD)

High will make sure that no matter what the scene is it is always the most mbps Which may not be needed, however when fast action does happen, the camera has no delay to meter the scene and up the bitrate if that is what it does.

it most likely will lower your battery life, as it has to process more data. I would say anywheres from I would guess maybe 5% difference from low to high?

I was assuming they're all VBR just with different caps. Perhaps NholdR can find out the details for us.

Correct. VBR with different Max's. Higher bit rate will get you more picture depth but eat up more space and battery. There are a ton of variables as to how much so I don't have a cheat sheet on that at the moment.
