now the main question is, is it for viewing the vids or is it for editing them? if for viewing ,you should find something relatively cheep, but, if its for working with the vids your gonna have to have deep pockets. whatever its going to be used for your going to need 4G ram and at least a 3Ghz dual core processor and a video card with 1G or more ram, so the video plays smooth. my wife lap top can handle countour footage but not 1080p footage , thats got 2G ram,2.33Ghz dual core and video card with 512Mb ram.

the 1080p deals with an awful lot of info thats going to streatch the abillities of most lap tops, you will probably find that a desktop will be your best bet as you can get so much more for your money.
hope this helps a bit :-)

want to edit 1080p? get a mac, no if ands or buts, i edit all my video on roomates imac now!

My hardware on my dell m1530 is better than the mac itself, however its the software & its integration with that hardware that makes up the difference for HD video editing.

Iceman's probably right on this ..and I'm not a fan of Macs. But almost everyone in the video/photo industries use Macs so there's got to be a reason for that.

One other thing to keep in mind is the screen's native resolution ought to be 1920x1080 or higher.

I know everyone that uses Macs raves about them, but I do not want(can't afford) to switch formats. My network at home and work are both PC and all that is invested in related software. Found a Dell Studio XPS 16 with Intel i7 proc., 8gb RAM, 1gb ATI video card, 1080p 100% color gamut screen, 500gb HDD. The only catch is no mobile broadband built in. I think I will get it anyway.

Just received my new ContourHD 1080P today. Shot my first video and loaded it onto my new HP dv7-3085dx. This laptop has the new i7 processor from Intel with 6GB ram, Nvidia Geforce CUDA and Windows 7. $1300 at BestBuy. I am using Pinnacle Studio for editing and everything works flawlessly... video is smooth as butter... I checked out the Windows Experience Index for this laptop. Microsoft ratings go up to a maximum of 7.9 My last computer which is only 1.5 years old and was dual core had a lot of 5.1 - 5.6 ratings.

The Windows Experience Index for this new laptop includes:
Processor Calcuations per second: 6.9
Memory Operations per second: 7.2
Business & Gaming Graphics Performance: 6.4
Disk Data Transfer Rate: 5.9

IMHO the Intel i7 processor's new memory controller interface is the unbeatable factor here for performance...
