List of recommended SDHC card and classes?

ramjet308

I have noticed differences between video quality in the VHOLDR Community. I do not know if its the editing process some people are doing but I do know that not having a fast wrtie card can hinder recording performance. I have noticed it personally with a different camera between a good fast brand name SD card and a slower writable card.

You may want to consider a list of suggested or recommended SDHC Micro cards Like, brands, class speeds and part numbers. It would be similar to how PC motherboard companies show a list of "certified" memory.

I have in the past along with other purchased a card only to find out it does not work or barely works in that specific device.

Just an idea.

Not sure about working ones, but an 8GB Patriot Class 4 will NOT work in my ContourHD. Tested one I had from my DS all it does is beep 3 times and turn off. I tried for an hour with formatting, etc and had no luck.

If anyone wants to post there results just do it here. I may go through and make a list myslef and post it once it has enough of a variety of info.

I had planned on Sandisk C4 8gbs for mine once i get the camera. I was also going to try the Kingston C4s in 8gb.

You guys have part numbers with those?

The Sandisk C2 16gb seems to work just fine.. it's faster than the C6 Kingston 16gb in my unscientific test..

I'd still be careful with the Class 2 cards... the stock card appear to be class 4 from my WRITE tests... Tho some may work it could have problems since the cam records at 3 to 5.3 MB/sec.

Rating info*; ( rated at MIN write speeds )*
SD Cards and SDHC Cards have Speed Class Ratings defined by the SD Association. The SD Speed Class Ratings specify the following minimum write speeds based on "the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied":[7]

Class 2: 2 MB/s - 13x
Class 4: 4 MB/s - 26x
Class 6: 6 MB/s - 40x

The plan is to get Sandisk C6 8gb cars. thats the fastest write speed in the the largest capacity I can get from Sandisk. Other brands claim C6 but from what i have found in test reviews is that's more unofficially the read speed. Great for a fancy phone but not for media equipment.

I went with the Transcend 8gb/c6 cards...at the tinme they were $15 each (now about 17 from Amazon).... they have a good write speed as per the test below;

===============================================
I did a read / write test of 2-8gb Transcend class 6 sd's and the stock 2gb unlabeled card that came with the cam.
Used a drive test prgm call HDTune (hdtune.com).

Results....
(both class 6 cards came in similar results)
To make a long story short, the class 6 cards at the higher file sizes (which we use) had a READ speed of over 15+MB/sec and a WRITE speed of 10+MB/sec.
The stock 2GB card also had a good READ speed of about 15MB/sec but the WRITE speed was just a hair under 5MB/sec.

What I see is that there is a diff in class speed MOSTLY IN THE WRITE MODE AND since the 2gb stock card is on the edge of the MAX write speeds of the cam I can see why every now and then a person could have problems with the stock card (slower card).

Any card that can write over 6 mb/sec shouldn't have any problems as I think the max of the cam is 5.3mb/sec or so. *(don't know if cam has a write buffer which could allow a slower card)

hi there

i've bought 2x8Gb adata class 6 microsd hc

if i use the cam i get files a little lesser than 2 gb and long about 1 hour 15 minutes, even if i leave the cam recording for 3/4 hours

why that? is that normal?

The cam will make about 1.5-2 gb files as it runs.... You will end up with multiple files if you run the cam long enough.
This is normal and the way the cam works with the mem cards.
At last check, I only lost about 2 seconds between the old and new file being started.
When the cam runs full on till the battery dies you may have 3-4 files including the last file which is closed before the battery is totally dead.

there shouldnt be a problem. the reason most of us are getting class 6 cards is ,that its always better to have the ability to write more info than not being able to write all the info, if you get what i mean ;-)
that was a problem with the original vholdr camera, the micro sd cards at the time wernt fast enough to keep up with info so the footage was breaking up when the scene got busy with data coming in.

but if the company say they work ,they work!

Not to mention faster cards can transfer your videos to your computer (or whatever other device) much faster. When moving 16GB of data around, it's good to have a speedy card :)

A-Data cards, used a bunch of them, different sizes, class 6, no problems at all.

I found some Sandisk 16gb, class 2 MicroSD cards at a good price RRP is $108AUD in Australia, I got them for $59.15AUD plus postage of under $10.00AUD.

https://www.shoppingsquare.com...

Not sure if they ship overseas, but for Aussies chasing extra cards, then this is a good place to look.

i geuss the classes are different per brand i have an old 8 gb sandisk and a new sandisk sdhc mobile ultra (class 2) and both the cards do 8 megabyte per second ! so thats would be class 6 right.

Not having much luck here with Dane-Elec 8gb Class 4 cards. Camera works intermittently, will beep and start recording but then appears to lock up after 20/30 secs and when you turn record off you don't get the 2 confirmation beeps and the video isn't written. Going to test with the 2gb stock card to make sure it's not an actual camera fault. This is for the HD1080p version.

the 1080p has a much higher bit rate than the HD... I would be running at least a class 4 card.
My testing of Transgend claas 6 card rated 10+mbits write speed and I believe this is the minimum rate you should be running when the 1080p cam is full tilt recording.

Isn't the 2Gb card provided with the 1080p a Class 4? I've RMA'd the camera now as the issue was occuring with all cards tested, including the 2gb included one and was occurring when the video was static as well. Pretty sure i saw mentioned on this site that a class 4 was recommended for the HD version.
