No Sound BUG... revisited

tommac13

I'm on my second cam... First one for mis-aligned lens and now no sound bug on the second.

I know this was posted a while back... wondering if Tech came up with an answer yet.

Here's my story;
1) Tested cam , all ok, short clips under 100M.

2) Full test today, first ride on MC. Turned on cam in driveway... about 10 mins later pulled over and started the record switch.
IN SD Mode
First file - 1.25gb , 48:31 time lenght (1,320,565kb)
Second File - .99gb , 48:31 lenght (1,047,654kb)
Third File - 562 Mb, 27:57 time lenght (576,483kb)

Turned off cam record in garage ( end of file three )

Fully turned off cam (double beep)

Plugged into computer, imported with easy file... no sound. Ran thru Easy File, QT, Sony Vegas...no sound
Turned on cam , made 3 test files all fine with sound

Pulled card, directly copied card to HD... still no sound,... even tried the MP4 rename just to make sure... no sound.

(maybe Nate can help here)**
The only thing I can think of is the SLEEP Mode. I didn't start recording right away but 10 mins after I turned it on. I think there is some sort of power -down without use to save battery life....
I feel that the cam may go to power down and not activate fully ... ie No sound record.

Anyone else ideas...? I'm going to redo the stand by and see if no sound results.

PS... it's not fun to do a 2 hr run and loose the audio. Hope we can solve this soon.

Tks.. shut-down is about 15 mins... doing the same myself trying to repeat the problem.
Like I said, only ON once but started record about 10+mins after original on... (drove about 2-3 miles away). On for whole trip till home, no loss of vid, just audio.

I've had several recordings with no sound. I can't tie it directly to anything except random occurrences.

That's what I had read before... but i was trying to get a dup of it by trying the exact routine. (hoped anyway)

Hey Guys,

We have some cameras with this issue back in the hands of our engineers. We're still working through the issue to identify the cause. We certainly appreciate the user testing too, it really helps! Please keep posting ideas here and we'll keep you updated as soon as we find a cause.

I tried my contour for the first time today and recorded 12 clips over a couple hours. Only the very last clip had any sound at all.

All...
Just try to remember the sequence you did when using the cam and no sound... will try to chart it... Maybe we can find a common thread.

Mine was ; Turned on and waited 10+ mins before starting record for 2 hours (3files).

well here you go this happened about 1 hour ago. rode to freinds bikle shop and shot7 files totaling apx 1.6G turned camera off for half hour, restarted and first file 1G no sound second file 100M sound. no reason just no sound on the file, its quite windy here today so its very obvious the lack of sound, its not important to me as it was a day of messing around but thought id post to start the "find the common thread" chart . ser#xxxx0908

hay only 4 cameras away. Hmmmmmmmm........ :|

I just got this problem today. Mounted and aimed with the laser, started recording and drove. Made two short errand stops, stopping recording on each stop (about 5 minutes per stop) and then a long drive downtown. Stopped the camera when i got to my destination and turned it off. All 3 files had no sound

I have found the same issue. First record works fine. If you stop recording for a few minutes, then power up a second time and record I lose audio recording. Sounds like a sleep mode of some type??

Me as well. I've had two videos record with zero audio. For me, it was the 5th video. The first 4 had audio, and the 5th had nothing.

Seem to be having similar problems here.

Went on a 15 minute MC ride in SD mode today.

No audio.

It worked yesterday on a 5 minute ride.

today i recorded an exhaust on an old '70s car and had the static whilst it was in my hand and it went in time with the exhaust noise. im now thinking if the mics are sensative to certain frequencies that are making a static sound. i will now try different frequencies to see if i can isolate which(if any ) are causing this........ well not now as its one in the morning!!!

Hi dave... Since (so far anyway) I've done a full format of the card, 8gb/class6, I haven't seen the no sound bug.
So if anyone else wants to try this it may work and doesn't require more than a few mins. Maybe 20 test videos since.

Lajko

I ran some testsbecause some people said no sound with Vegas and some saying sound out of sync. I use vegas.
In testing, I could get sound, no sound or out of sync sound WITH THE SAME FILE! It all depended on what program I used to play it and what computer. One example was out of sync sound and correct sound using the SAVE version of QuickTime, but on different computers. Same with sound or no sound.

I suspect all files have sound but there is an error in the encoding of the file header. Different programs and even the same program on different systems is interpreting the deader differently. It could be a value that is slightly out of spec or conflicting with some other setting in the file header - something that some programs can deal with and others can't. Then you have to take into consideration what codecs and drivers are on the computer as it could be one of those (as with the results with QuickTime).

I feel they should look closely at the file header. Compare it to files from other sources which never have a problem but have the same video format - 720p (like the Flip). Check how a boolean FALSE is encoded and whether you use FFh or 01h. Also look at what unused fields are set to - random values or cleared out to 00h or FFh?

If, after doing a file dump, there really is no sound, then I would look at the auto gain circuit or software. Maybe the loud thump you get from sliding the record switch is causing that to lock up.

(Observation: If a full format cleared up the problem, maybe they are skipping over some bytes or records when writing the file or closing the file. The skipped over parts would be garbage. Write a huge file of all #F's or something. Then record a movie and dump the file. Look for a string of that value to see if some part of the file was not written.)

Well the bug bites again...
Didn't use the cam for a day or two. Turned it on today and got 2 No sounds vids. ( both short test vids )
All appeared fine during recordings.

Since then have run it for 10 short clips and all is fine again, could not repeat problem.

Hi RaceRecall,

I would probably hitup the support email. They may need to ask a few more questions to see if you've got a bum unit or something else is going on. Either way, they'll be able to help.

Well. second time in two days...
First two recorded files have audio, Second two don't.
Still think it has to do with the delay of recording after cam turn on... Turing info over to support

Hi all,

Brand new unit...Recorded 8 files and 1 ended up with no sound.
Even know the sound is crap I suspect a problem camera.

Random problems are the worst to solve and I don't want to be the person working through the problem.

Nate should I send an email to support or contact my retailer here in Australia?

Hi
This random no sound effects me also. I seem to get some sound on some short videos. I got 10 mins with sound after, stopping recording and restarting. Will investigate further. There does not seem to be a posted solution. I will check with tech support as suggested above by Nate.

Hi ozbizz,

You might want to start with support here and let them know where you are. They may be able to arrange a swap with shorter distance.

Thanks,

Something new to try ( for others ).

I had 3 files without sound... delete them and did 2 more short 1 mins vids. Both of the second two also had no sound.

I deleted just the VHOLDR file in the dir and retested the cam. Guess what, the videos I tested after had sound.

Now if someone can repeat this ( just delete the vholdr file (small text file that contains 'contourhd' then run a test file), maybe we may yet find the bug causeing the no sound

Hey Sanrio,

Drew answering for Nate, we're still trying to isolate this issue. The best thing everyone can do is work with support on the swaps, the more units we have here the better we can analyze and solve this.

Thanks all!

Prob not yor battery (sanrio)... if your battery had cause a problem, you would more than likely had a file you were unable to open, not just audio lack.
The audio problem has something to do with internal software IMHO. I could get 2 perfect files then 3+ with no sound... If I deleted the Vholdr file in the root OR formated the card it would then work again for a while. Problem was you never knew when it would stop having audio.
Short story... if your having audio bug problems, contact support to help you resolve the problem.

All this talk about diagnosing an obvious product defect! A piece of legal advice: if the mic doesn't work reliably, the product is not suitable for the intended purpose and it is a manufacturer's problem. In short, the product is defective! Arghh. (That's a pirate saying to express disatisfaction). If you have random no sound, you should send it back and ASAP. You should demand your money back based on the fact the product is defective.

It is a damn shame, really. Because the product is otherwise such a great one. Just received my new Contour and guess what? Random no sound! Obviously all the comments in this thread has not prompted the mfr. to improve this defective POS.

Here's what I've found that tends to support my contention that the product is defective: If you yell into the mic upon first turning the record on, I believe you will find that the unit will function fine. You can also try tapping on the housing a few times. This works for me.

My theory is that in response to the overly sensitive mic problem of VholdR, the mfr. redesigned the mic with one that has no sensitivity at all. In effect, it freezes when at rest for any length of time.

It seems to me that Twenty20 is nothing more than a marketing firm peddling a makeshift product to stay in front of the demand curve. Clearly, their so-called technical support group is nothing more than a bunch of Geek Squad refugees. How else do you explain so many complaints about the same defect?

davidwhitefield

ill be the first rebuff here ;-)

now your last statement of

"It seems to me that Twenty20 is nothing more than a marketing firm peddling a makeshift product to stay in front of the demand curve. Clearly, their so-called technical support group is nothing more than a bunch of Geek Squad refugees. How else do you explain so many complaints about the same defect?"

would you say the same of microsoft or sony? they are also guilty of being "a marketing firm peddling a makeshift product to stay in front of the demand curve." if you look at the problems of the ps3 and xbox 360 in the past. now what did they do about the problems they had? well they done exactly what these guys do , and thats exchange a unit to find out what the problem is so that they can correct the fault in future batches.

if we were to look at the amount of cameras that have been dispatched and the amount of cameras that has issues, you would find that it would be a small percent of us customers that have had any issues at all. the fact that the company has this forum for us all to express our opinions about the product (and any issues that we have) shows alot about the company wanting us to have the best product on the market, how many of the 'competitors' have forums where we can give abuse or praise about their products??

sure you have a point to shout , but to start throwing acusations about a bunch of people who have come up with a great product (as you admit) and calling them names such as " Geek Squad refugees" is some what childish, is it because you fear people who are able to take critisism and do something constructive about it, or is it because you are 'SpecialEd needs' who needs to be the "look at me ,look at me " sort? i dont think it is but its not nice for someone to say it, is it?

sure there has been problems with a new product, and when you take into accout that there are thousands of units out ther with no problem at all , it has to say something about the companies strive for perfection. just look at the human race, we are no where near perfect after millions of years in production and each day new models are set free and they are not perfect. so what can we do ,shit happens, it just depends on how we deal with it. if your that pissed off with a great product, then my free advise (take it or leave it) is to contact the company and ask for your money back and see what happens, my guess is that they will say 'ok' . if you dont ask you dont get!!

from the astmatic epilectic (and there i was thinking i was perfect!) but happy with my lot,
Dave ;-)

I love the camera. Wind noise is my biggest pet peeve, i'll figure that out either with blocking, new wired mic, or Final Cut. I've tried a couple cameras and I think that this ContourHD is a good product. I also am glad to have them interested in working with us customers who will input some good critique and hopefully put it to some good use. We use these things for different reasons/sports/etc so meeting all our expectations must be difficult to pinpoint especially with a "new to market" device, BUT that said, the picture quality is good, cam is compact and the bugs will be worked out. For me the few hundred per cam was not going to break the bank as long as they continue to stand by them.
I do find the magenta line unacceptable but will have discussions with them on it this week. I'll test my other camera tomorrow which is supposed to be another sunny so. cal day so we'll see if the line is there in this cam. It was not in my first (of 3) cameras ever so I believe this one has some defect. I've seen Nate mention a lens fix coming. maybe that will solve that one.

I've seen two cams side by side - same conditions react differently.
Curious if you test the cam get 'Flare" then remove protective cover and retest... wonder if it could be the plastic lens cover not the cam itself.

Have not tried my second (third actually, sent back the first) camera yet so not sure about the flair but unacceptable as it is now. Just got back from picking up two camera filters and hopefully that will help out with this cam. going to download the .mov files and view now. Also worked a bit on trying to reduce the sound of wind. Will let you know if I had any luck. Also got some wazu mounting custom options being made for rear view and static front view for my Harley. Gonna need a bigger battery or stator or regulator or something.
