Portable video player that supports the CHD format

XVUSA

Howdy all,

Has anyone find a portable video player that will playback the H.264 .MOV files without conversion and right off the MicroSD card (adapted to SD card if necessary).

I'd like to be able to view files without lugging a laptop with me.

thanks,

~Pat

I'm looking into it a bit and there are a few out there that look like they might do the trick but it will be hard to know for sure until someone tries them out. If anyone has tried this or this , please post your experience or recommendations.

Cheers,

Chris

Here is what I know so far.

Because the CHD uses the .MOV container most portable players will not support it because of licensing. The people at Archos are saying the 5/7 line will support .MOV with H264 if you buy the MOV plug in for $30 but it will only support SD resolutions.

The 2 players you linked to look like they would work but I need true portability with LCD and battery. I could put together a package with one building a battery and attaching a LCD but by that time I would have spent the same amount of money as a used Tablet PC that would do a ton more.

Here we go.

I think the SmartQ brand players might work, they both run Linux out of the box with Ubuntu. I have an Ubuntu system I'll test mplayer on with a sample CHD file to make sure the OS will work.

Nope, Apple QT licensing kills playback on most players.

Did anyone ever try this setup?

I haven't gotten one yet, but the specs on this WD TV palyer look right to me. (just saw you were looking for something with a LCD and battery for portability and the WDTV has neither. Sorry.)

The WDTV reads and plays the raw files from the camera nicely. I have one. WDTV is nice but not portable. I mingt combine a portable DVD with the WDTV and a battery to make a portable player but it will be bulky.

Anyone tried an android based phone for playback?

Good Question, There are a bunch of android based PMP's coming out but I have yet to hear about MOV support. On top of that it has to support h264 in MOV.

Remember iPod connector for cameras? http://www.zeazonmall.com/Prod...
That was great (for that time)

I dodn't thing iPhone can handle 720p not to mention 1080p.

True but my application is to preview the angle and horizon level of the installed camera so I don't need smooth playback just the ability to check those things. I could set the record to SD, check the cam on the iphone then switch back to HD when it is adjusted correctly.

No luck with Apple thought, they want you to buy multiple memory configurations of phone instead of being able to insert a memory card.

Don't get me wrong, I dodn't want iPhone to have memory card slot, just to be able to use connector :)
Let me know if you figure something out.
Cheers!

Yes but in the past I have found players that play mov but will not supoort mov with h.264. I am on hold with Viewsonic right now and I have a file hosted for them to download and try. So far it sounds like they will test for me. I'll post as soon as I know something.

I just got redirected, DAMN!

Trying to think positive about this player and hoping it will work but something tells me it won't have the power to play these files back. I think its powered by windows CE because the email I got back from the product manager said "CE Devices" in her signature.

They have the files so just waiting to hear back, I asked for an evaluation unit if they can spare one.

And it works!

For 720 at least, no 1080 support. Here is a copy what Viewsonic sent me.

Both files were MPEG-4 H.264 format. The file 720test.mov could be played on VPD400.
The file 1080test.mov file could not be played due to the resolution was 1920x1080. VPD400 can only play up to 720p. The Micro SD card is supported up to 32GB.

This player is going to fill my need even without 1080 support. And at $120 it's a good del for CHD owners who want to view in the filed. Plus it looks like a decent PMP

People in North America the VPD400 is available at Fry's for $149 normally, the one here in north San Diego California has them on sale for $129 till 11/25 which is only 10 more than the best price I found online. Unless you want the white one which is $116 online but who would want that ? =]

It seems to do everything it says it will. Its very light and just a little bigger than my Iphone but lighter lighter than the Iphone. The built in speakers are ok but not very loud. I've put just about every video format I have on it and they all play without a problem. It also comes with a remote control and the cables to hook it up to a tv or monitor. Its not touch screen so you have to push buttons but I prefer that since I won't be messing up the screen with my dirty hands

Sounds like a winner so far. I've got a 7" portable DVD player with video in so I plan to attach it to the bottom and playback on the 7"

You can also manage the files from the player too ! You can copy, paste, and delete the files. It takes a few minutes to copy and paste a 700 meg file but you can transfer files from the microSD card to the players memory so that gives you an extra 8gig of memory to play with.

Are you doing this with it connected to a PC or did you find a way on the unit itself?

~P

You can do it on the unit itself, no computer involved

Where is this feature? I just got mine and have been reviewing the user manual but the only manual I could find was for Europe.

Do tell.

Once you have a file name selected on the screen before it plays, when the little white icon is sort of flashing, press the play pause/stop button and you will see the copy edit delete appear on the right. Let me know if this works for you. I found it by accident

HA!

NICE FIND.

Works perfectly, now to test text files.

Text files work and you can read them on the unit as well. So the plan would be to have all the configuration options within lots of text files that you can copy to the card to use with the camera. Easy process, delete the file on the card, copy file from internal memory. I need to connect to see if you can make multiple folders in the internal memory, that's the only way it will work because all fo the text files will have the same name.

That is great news, this means those people who have the 1080 and keep multiple settings text files and move them over at any time.

David you now have a playback device and a way to set your cam in the field.

After connecting to a TV I have noticed that that the viewsonic cannot quite produce 30fps during playback, it's close but a bit on the choppy side. Still good enough for my use.
