Underwater Housing?

shaunco

Any chance you guys are working on an underwater housing for the Contour HD? I really want to use this camera while surfing ... and if the housing could support it, it would be cool to use it scuba diving.

Great question and YES we are working on a waterproof housing for the ContourHD. The hope is that it will be suitable for scuba diving to a certain depth, nothing has been solidified yet. However, it's in the works and we are hoping for this to be available later in the year.

BholdR - please keep us updated on your progress, and if you need a former national team waterskier and now a kiteboarder to test any mounts or waterproof housings please let me know.
I really want to pick up one of these cameras for videos of waterskiing (esp at 60fps) and for kitesurfing and am holding off on a purchase at the moment!

I would like to see an underwater case that can be mounted to a goggle mount attached to my mask for scuba diving. Another option I would like to see is a goodman handle mount that I can grip and direct the video with my hand.

For the case itself, from a simplicity perspective, I do not think access to switches is necessary (for scuba). Most dives are less than 60 minutes (let alone 2 hours). For one to turn on the camera and place it in the case, and to turn it off once removed from the case is an acceptible trade-off instead of making something complicated with watertight buttons and switches (increasing bulk and cost). One of the purposes of having a camera like this is to make it portable and wearable...

I know there are many other watersports that this case would be designed for, but this is one scuba diver's opinions.

I've worked on a housing for the past year with success to 90 feet in depth. I'm currently working on optics to handle the wide angle lense of the Contour. I'm sure the product from Vholder will be a great addition to the accessories already provided. The current housing I have is not in production (right now). My point of manufacturing is Northern California (not China) which runs with an "American Made" price tag. The three B's apply to products used by divers.. balance, buoyancy and bucks....

I think I have just what your looking for, I have also been working on a housing for the past year, long before this blog came out, and I'm glad to say it's done..for the most part, Im still working on the mounting aspect, I have combined two different vholdr mounts to make a scuba mask mount. Video posted, check it out, let me know what you think.

Looking good, I also am interested, do you have a ballpark $$ figure in mind? I work in a hyperbaric facility, perhaps a discount for some pressure testing? Hah, hah

GMS

Hey kenj, As Im going through production I am still considering what price to put in this, lets just say for the basic unit, it will be affordable, less than the price of the camera, witch you can't say for most video housings. and I'll do better than a discount, I will give you a production unit in about 4 to 6 weeks and you can take it to 165, (five atmospheres) if it doesn't kato it's yours... but I'll need an officel report of course .. :) GMS

GMS---you are soooo on! Let me know when. We used to go to 165 fsw (6ATA) all the time, now we no longer treat emergencies so I would kind of have to do it after hours, if you know what I mean. So you would have to send me an "official form"?, and we could take it from there.

Dive tested the H2OV last week with the VP of OP. for VholdR, the prototype worked great, went to 115 feet +... We need lots of light in the dark northwest waters but warm water app. will be fine. First production units will be ready by the end of the month...GMS

As soon as you allow orders I will be getting one ASAP. :D Wish that you had a production unit now as I am headed on a long trip and would have loved getting some video.

Any change of getting a custom mount? I am would like to use a standard tripod mount I think.

Hey, Hey, I am finally taking orders for the H2OV, there are a limited number of first production units available. I will try to prioritize sales to everyone how got on the website list, (it got big fast, and they will sell out) Second production units are already in the works, and you will have the choice of a basic unit or the power control unit. Thanks for your patients and support... GMS http://www.gmsconcepts.com/BUY...

how about a clear, snug tough shell... basically so we can go paintballing without worry of F-ing up the camera. A nice slide on, easy wipe moulded case that slides on from the front a with a rear clip on back would be great. Access to buttons isn't even important, you could switch the camera on, slide in and voila. There'd need to be a tiny hole were the mic is obviously. The H2OV is perfect for what it was designed for, but not practical for head, body or gun mounting. Great job on the test vids GMS by the way.

ok no offense GMS, but you said affordable. sorry, but at $250 i don't quite think that is a deal. if you made it cheaper, sales would be through the roof. just my 2 cents. and i am seriously not trying to be a jerk, just giving you honest feedback as a potential customer.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. good or bad, it's all good.. I've been working hard to develop the H2OV into a professional underwater dive housing for the VholdR and ContourHD cameras and the H2OV has now reached this goal. The new housings have full control of the camera operation, and come with a one year warranty. With comparison marketing I feel the price is competitive and very reasonable, Units are being beta tested and operational footage will be out soon...

Nice concept.. for divers. I was surprised you could get so much clear and bright videos from under water like that.. my videos in anything past mid-day were dark and muddy looking on the roads.

If I may ask, are there any thoughts for a light way water / weather proof case for bikers? Though the ContourHD is 'weather resistant', I wouldn't take it out in the rain like I would my other cameras.. the dive case looks a tad too heady for biker helmet wear.. Any thoughts?

Well, I'd like to get mine wet but not THAT wet. I'm looking for a light solution for waterline shoots. Would be handy for fishing, waterski, sailboat work, etc. While the GMS product looks good it's probably overbuilt & thus +$$ for my needs. Just bought a dive light with the right specs with hopes of modding it. Anybody else using these on the hulls of watercraft etc?

I was thinking of that, but didn't find proper light to fit camera in, one is too small, second too big.
Let us know what you bought.

I would be interested to know what dive torch you are using. My other option was a lens cap and, of all things, a condom bonded to the lens cap to cover the camera... now how do i tell the pharmacist I want the largest condom he has for a camera...!

The GMS system looks spectacular, and I'm sure it works marvels when you need that durability. I'm trying to choose a headcam at the moment, and the contourHD is one right up at the front.
Sadly, I want to take this on the water for sailing races in a skiff, which means lots of spash, lots of swimming, and the camera will certainly end up underwater. The thing is, it'll never be under 1- 2m of depth, so I just need enough for submerssion, not diving. I'm also often on the water for 6+ hours in a day, so it's not ideal to have to start the camera when I'm launching and have it die half way through my day, I love your system for the recording and power switches...
Do you intend to have your light-weight model conserve the switches? Or is it going to be too small to take it? If someone were to tell me that by next summer there would be an affordable waterproof casing with such switches accessible from the outside, I'd have my choice made...

To the guys at VholdR, is the casing you're designing going to accommodate such a switch?

Hey Lowt, Even though your not a diver, the H2OV will work just fine for your application if you will be mounting it to the boat, (bow, mast, etc.) The smaller and lighter unit we are designing will also have full control of the camera functions and we will be beta testing some prototypes next mounth. VholdR will also be releasing there waterproof case soon, but I have no specification info on there design. GMS

Hey,
The H20V looks great, but considering that it's almost as expensive as the camera itself, it doesn't make sense to buy it if I'm not using it to it's full potential (just wasted money)... I am currently looking to put it on a helmet so whenever someone asks me what it's like to sail screaming reaches faster than the wind, I can point them to a video...
The lite unit sounds perfect for what I need, especially if it has the camera controls (assuming it isn't the better part of the camera's price)... Since the sailing season around here is over I can wait. It's great to hear that there could be a perfect piece of equipment for my needs!
I guess I'll find out soon enough! Thanks!

if i was a betting man i would bet that its going to be the official product, as madison are one of the uk importers of vholdr products, and knowing first hand on how ueless they are(i worked in the bike trade for ten years), theyve probably got the page ready for the announcement and put it up without thinking(which they do). but if its true on the price then we can only thank them for being dumb and posting in advance :-)

I'm convinced that this would be the best choice of camera, if only I could get the promised "coming soon" waterproof case. I'm a whitewater kayaker, and the "water-resistant" case just won't cut it for rolling and punching holes. I've used the inexpensive flip ultra with waterproof housing on whitewater creek runs, and it has worked great. I would really like higher quality video and a helmet mount. The GMS is fine for scuba, but cost is too high, and its bulky for helmet mount.
Rumors have been the housing for the Contour HD 1080p would be out mid-November...that would be now. Is VHoldr's waterproof housing going to hit the market before Christmas, or am I going to have to settle for a GoPro Hero?

skifly

I am also waiting for info on this too...! Guys, an update or a sneak preview of the case would be appreciated!! Would also be good for the marketing as new customers would not head towards the hero if they need something waterproof...

Cheers
