Vegas pro is a STEEP learning curve.

Final Cut Pro is, too, but is far more flexible.

For a beginner, if you have a MAC, you can use iMovie and render out as a DVD using Quicktime...no reason to use WMV files! PC's WILL play QT movies if you install Quicktime player!

This is my dilemma too. I bought Vegas Pro 9 but still cannot get it to work for me. I have been though the file renaming stuff (.mov to mp4) but there are still issues with sound plus the learning curve of the software. I'm very frustrated right now as I can't edit my sweet looking movies. Though I hated the very unstable Winodws Movie Maker it worked for me back in the day of 640x480 .avi files. Somebody PLEASE come up with decent editting tool that actually works and can be used without multiple steps of other software to trick it into working.

For PC, your choice is Premiere Pro...very expensive, but a little easier to work than Vegas.

Final Cut Pro is by and large the standard, but not an option for PC for the most part.

Look into VoltaicHD and MpegStreamClip for a free/low cost solution to transcode files to different formats, or Quicktime Pro.
