No Sound with Vegas Pro

FabDH

I try to edit my Videos and I downloaded the Sony Vegas Platinum Demo. When I put my video files on the timeline, I have no audio. The audio-line doesn´t show any waves...
Is this because of the demo or is it a special soundformat of the Video file? When I play it with vlc I can hear the sound, when I try it with some other videofiles it also works.
So whats wrong? Can anybody help please?

Thanks,
Fab

Common here,

Rename the File to .mp4 (replacing .mov) BEFORE you put it into Vegas.

I have tried to find out why vegas does not like the file however simply renaming works perfectly.

When I rename it and the open it in Vegas, the audio is out of sync . PITA to re-align it. Anyone have suggestions on fixing that?

just try this method and see if it works..
open the video in easy edit, and then clip 1 second out of the file, then open vegas and import the clipped file and see if the audio is out of sync then.

ive used this method and it seems to work alright, it may be worth a try

What version of Vegas are you using?
Vegas version 9.0-b works Ok without renaming anything. I dropped HD and SD onto the timeline and they work OK.
That's one nice thing about Vegas - you can drop anything on the timeline and it correctly resamples & mixes stuff without a problem.
If you're using an earlier version of Vegas, I suggest updating. I found Vegas 8 has audio problems on some computers. It is important to note what version of Vegas you are using and always check the Sony site to be sure you have the latest release.

Where did you get 9.0-b from? I have version 9.0a and it seems to be the latest version per the sonycreativesoftware.com website. I can open files in Vegas without renaming them...but I have a definite audio sync problem I'd love to find a solution for.

the 9.0-b is vegas and not vegas pro, there is a bit of a difference between them, for a start a shed load of money! ;)

I only have Vegas Pro, not Vegas Movie Studio. Maybe 9.0-b was out then they pulled it or it showed up on a check for updates. I don't remember, except that I updated last week and don't have any audio problems. I'm running 32 bit version. Maybe you're running 64 but version and there is a problem there.

I decided to run some tests with Easy Edit (from VholdR), Nero Showtime, Vegas 8 (9 is at home), VLC Media Player and Quicktime player. The results make me suspect something is slightly out of spec in how the audio is encoded in the file.

I found that audio was out of sync on Vegas-8 (file renamed to MP4) and Quicktime (mov or MP4) and even Easy Edit. VLC media player and Nero Showtime had no problem.

Ulead Video Studio-10 didn't like the file at all.

I suspect there is something wrong in the header and it depends on how different programs read the header as to whether you get sound or no sound or if the sound is out of sync and by how much.

It could be something simple like how a boolean false is stored. Some compllers/languages use FF hex, some use 01 hex. Then it depends, too, on the program reading the value and whether it looks for FF hex, 01 hex or non-zero value for a FALSE or if it simply looks for zero for true, else it is false.

This is something the VholdR guys should look at both on PC and MAC platforms. On the same computer with 5 different programs, I've seen different things happen with the sound. Those same programs do not have a problem with other MOV files. I was really surprised to see their software Easy Edit display the out of sync problem.

With most outdoor stuff you'd never see a sync problem unless someone was talking. I tested by tapping on a hard surface and playing an organ. So from what I've found, it is not just Vegas that has a sound problem.

As another interesting note: I started up a virtual Xp machine on my XP system and did a fresh install of Quicktime. (The virtual machine is for programming so it never has had any video software installed other than Windows Media Player). The MOV file played fine. So on one system Quicktime was out of sync and on another it was OK. This would indicate a deeper underlying Windows XP problem dealing with what other codecs, video drivers and audio drivers are on the system. That explains why some people have a problem and others do not.

This may be a tricky thing to solve OR as I suspect, there is something in the file header that is slightly out of spec and finding that would solve everyone's audio problems.

I am having problems with Vegas 9.0 pro. I converted my movie using SUPER to mp4 and all it does is play the audio..

Additionally, when I use the .mov file it is very choppy. Anyone else experience that problem?

The Contour is a great camera but the .mov files are driving me insane. What utility are you guys using to convert (rename) these files to .mp4?

tommac13

Using Vegas Platium edition...
No utility, Just a simple right click of the mouse and rename the file extension to mp4. Vegas then shows the audio track with the video when dragged into editing area.

Got it now...thanks for the response tommac13.
For those of you that might be stuck here on the rename: Vista was not allowing me to edit the file extention. Go to Computer- Tools- folder options, on the view tab: Uncheck the box for "Hide extensions for known file types" This will allow you to see & edit the file extention.

Yes I am using 9.0b. I have found the solution, at least for me. It's not Vholdr or Sony Vegas that's the enemy...it's Quick Time. http://www.sonycreativesoftwar...

I rolled back to an older version and am free to edit till I tucker out. Hope this helps others.

I dont know if this is just my pc but i just got a quicktime update to version 7.6.4 and now i have no audio in vegas. Tried to rename and same no audio. Vegas says : Audio stream attributes could not be determined.

Before update i had audio and video in vegas but had the sync issue. I dont know the version of the last quicktime i had but i just d/l it last week. vegas is 9b. I dont have time tonight to figure it out but i will try in the morning.

OK FWIW. I am using Vegas Pro 8.0b I have both the contourHD and a Panasonic widescreen video camera. I had issues with Vegas not recognizing the 16:9 aspect from the panasonic. I found a simple little free program that finds the .MOD files and quickly converts them to MPG with the 16:9 intact.

I just received my ContourHD and notice no audio in Vegas. I tried file renaming and so on. I then tried the program I use for the Panasonic. told it to find the .MOV and rename them to mp4. Now Vegas sees widescreen and audio is synced.

The program is here
http://zyvid.com/smf/index.php...

Its so small it does not even need to install. just uncompress it and place it in a desired folder and create a shortcut of the exe to the desktop.

Hope this helps.

"The program is here
http://zyvid.com/smf/index.php..."

Didn't work for me. I'm using Vegas Pro 8.0b and after that program's conversion the sound was still out of sync. What a pain this is.

Yeah I thought I had it. I did some basic video audio sync testing and its still off. I had the same problem with Tivo Files, gave up on those.

Back to the drawing board.

Ok, I think I found it. Its called Format Factory. I just tried a 1 minute clip and all sound appear to be synced up. I will try and actual sync test tomorrow. The interface in Format factory is stupid simple and takes no time to convert.

Sorry, have not had time. I have two websites I have been having to update along with trying to get a new clutch and tranny into my jeep. I hope to get to this official test of this this weekend. I will keep you posted.

Sorry for the delay. I fianlly did the sound sync test and it all works just fine. I converted the contout MOV files into MP4 and AVI and then edited and rendered out as a WMV. sound is synced up just fine. Again, I used Formfactory.

Link to test video is here. Forgive the dirty hands I was messing with my jeep when I remembered to do this little project.

Running Vista (uggg!) Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0b and tried the two software converter programs above....no audio whatsoever...when I drag the .mp4 imported media to the editing field in vega, no audio track is presented, no audio on playback....setting vega project up in stereo or 5.1 channels does not alter this sorry state of affairs.

Odd that one guy can use the converter software above and it works fine and another has no luck, very strange

I have the same problem. I've tried renaming, downgrading quicktime to 7.1.6, clipping with Easy Edit, and even the convert program mentioned above. Any other suggestions? When I view the video in quicktime alone it works fine, sound and all. Just when importing into Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b I get no sound. Initially it would tell me it couldn't recognize the audio and would only show the video stream. When I downgraded to QT 7.1.6 it would recognize the audio stream but it wouldn't show any of the peaks and there would be no sound.

I've always had sound when playing videos with VHold software but not after editing with my editing software to convert to DVD. The Camera records sound in Mono, Some editing software, Roxio for one maybe Vegas as well will not capture or understand mono sound. If you use software like Super or other format editing utilities and convert the mono sound to stereo, leaving everything else as it is then your editing software such as Roxio may work correctly.

Finally cracked it.... I tried all the ideas above, no go with any.
So, to make it work with Vegas Platinum (build 92) I did the following -

Using AVS Video converter I set it to convert to MOV, but on the options I set the audio to MP3 and set it running. It does the audio conversion very quickly and then when you take it into Vegas it's happy, and the audio is synced.... I'm finally happy.

thanks for that one! ive just found that the contour1080 footage wont carry the audio into vegas either,
now i tried your method and it didnt work,it degraded the video. so i converted it to a wmv HD file using AVS and everything was happy and synced :-)

as a footnote changing a 1080 file name to mp4 or clipping it wont bring the audio up in vegas :-(

That work very nicely David, much better than converting to .MOV
I like Vegas and now can finally use it properly. Thanks for the feedback.

as a new thing to this one, the recent up date to quicktime this stops the renaming of the file route used to get into vegas, i found this out by renaming a file from a 1080 and didnt get any audio. after a few emails back and forth to sony, they reconize an issue on this front with the latest version of quicktime. if you were renaming the files and it suddenly has stopped working, then you will have to uninstall quicktime and reinstall the earlier version. pian in the arse eh!

ive now been using AVS converter to get my audio up by converting to an HD WMV file and this has put the audio in sync every time without affecting the quality of footage. hooray :-)

So my question is why does this happen, and why hasn't been fixed if it's something that can be fixed?

davidwhitefield

i think that its down to the construction of a mov file and the way that quicktime converts it so that other programmes can use it, thats the way it looks to me since the latest version of quicktime stopped vegas from getting the audio when the file was renamed. sony have told me that they are working on a fix so i guess we'll have to wait and see..

by the way someone please correct me if ive guessed wrong :-)

That's too bad. It's been some time since I last worked on a video from this camera, and I don't remember how I ended up making it work.

Clipping in the horribly unstable Easy Edit takes about two hours for a 20 minute video, and it takes just as long with the RAD Video Tools Bink Converter and Format Factory. I don't remember which offers no loss of quality.

Maybe it worked without alterations in the Vegas Pro demo that I used to have? I now have the Vegas Movie Studio HD.
