Firmware update for more than 2Gb storage?

williards

Are there any plans to provide a firmware update that will allow our VholdR cameras to use more than a 2GB micro sd card? The 8gb micro sd cards are dirt cheap right now and would be an awesome enhancement if the camera could use it.

im currently having a look at some 4G cards and am going to try it out and see what the results are. although the camera dosnt support larger than 2G cards it wont be a waste if it dosnt work coz im pretty sure the vholdr guys will sort out the upgrade soon, as the demand there.as soon as ive tried the 4G's ill let you know :)

FYI, you should never buy memory cards on ebay, they can be repackaged & relabeled (mostly Compact flash cards)

Id be interested on what memory card you use as well, however the battery will most likely only last until 3 hours.

What version was your VholdR 1.0 or 1.2? It's in a sticker inside the rear cover.

any new developsments here ?

.... since i want to record my whole motorbike holiday, this is a quite important issue for me, next to lots of batteries or (even better) DC power ...

(but i'll be guessing i'll have to buy 4 2gb microSD's and 4 batteries, and during the evening/night somehow backup the micro SD's and charge the batteries)

Hey Guys,
Still nothing new to report on this front. When there is something new we will be sure to let you know.

Hey I work for a coffee company, if I send you guys (vholdr) some coffee will you chain someone to a computer and force them to work on this firmware update? I'm only getting about 20-22mins of footage on the stock 1gb card on my mountain bike.
thanks Josh

Have you written 4GB though?

SD and SDHC aren't compatible. My SD card reader won't read an SDHC card.

for those that are using 4G MicroSD cards, can you please provide us with some details around the brand of your card? my 1GB was only able to record 30 minutes of video and now I'm in need of more space. thanks.

I was told today by Vholdr that they "are not planning on improving the storage capacity for the Vholr". However, they did go on to say that the new ContourHD will take 16GB card!

Typical, a new product comes out and your existing one never gets any updates. I'm not buying a new camera only for half of it's features not to work.

Is it really too much to ask for SDHC and a battery charging light that works? A charging indicator is pretty useful and when you've gone to the trouble of having the light and documenting it in the manual then you could at least fix it?!?!

Poor support = customers looking elsewhere next time.

We did try producing some firmware update changes for the VholdR however each time the camera did not take the changes very well. Therefore we decided to try and provide a camera that was superior for all of our customers that included almost everything that they had asked for.
If you have encountered individual problems with your cameras I would recommend sending an email to support@vholdr.com.

That suggests that the hardware has issues then. I realise you can't always work around limitations and hardware design faults. I just hope you're learning.

You should at least offer existing customers an upgrade discount for their loyalty?

Bean

You have to understand that cards 4GB or larger use a different memory standard (SDHC). This requires hardware that supports this standard. VholdR simply does not have that hardware. Even if they could get a software fix working it would be a bandaid solution.

There is nothing wrong with VholdR, it simply uses previous generation parts. If you want next-generation features, get a next-generation camera, like ContourHD.

gilesjuk, we have learned quite a lot and put a lot of that learning into the ContourHD, and we did in fact offer a discount to our current customer base for their loyalty and support. We certainly appreciate everyone's patience and support and we always want to do the best we can for you guys.

Nate,
I've been a VholdR/Twenty20 customers for a couple of camera generations but I haven't received an incentive to upgrade. In fact, I sent an e-mail and was told I "might" be able to upgrade sometime after the product was released.

Waddup?

Hey maxxout,

I'm sorry about that. We sent emails out from the site and directly to user provided addresses. We had a limited number we could offer for upgrade which sold out quickly. I apologize if we were unable to get you on that list.

Another reason to explore other oppertunities, for my next purchase.
I have had my VHOLDR for about two months...
Now there is a new product, while the current camera is crap and there are no plans to keep exsisting customers satisfied.
Good luck with your business model.

Here in Western NC, I have met quite a few people who have purchased your product in the past and comment about what a turd it is.
These are all people who will never buy your product again. They have no problem telling their friends and anyone who listens to their comments.
How does your company expect to stay solvent with this kind of negative feedback.

Please note the people I meet in Western NC are from all over the US. Everyone, has a video camera here and they all compare cameras with other visitors.

The VholdR is "crap"? Please, I'd love to know of a better self contained camera that can handle the same abuse. I mean, other then the ContourHD. Maybe I'm a fanboy, or maybe I've never seen such a device, or maybe your the kind of guy that buys a new computer every day because anything less then the latest is "crap"?

I have a 4G in my camera. All i did was copyed and pasted the files from the 1g card that came with my camera. Then pasted it onto the 4G card. I have been using it for about a month now and it works GREAT. Also had a 2G in it before the $g and it also worked GREAT. GREAT camera just the Sound sucks!!. Can anyone Help me get my Video's to work with my Windows movie maker on Vista64. I get Sound, but no video.

update from dave.......

i decided the other day to have a go with a large sdhc card. so i put in a 8g card ive got for my contour into my vholdr to see what happens, and guess what......... it works! now it will only record 1.99g files at a time but ive recorded over 5gs of files on to the card with no problems so far.. ive used 4 batteries as well, but it seems that the card will accept the footage no worries :)

the card is a sandisk mobile ultra 8g class 6 card, i will keep experimenting, but the only limitation seems to be the battery and the 1.99g file size.

oh the vholdr is a #1102 model if that makes any difference, and its formatted in FAT32.

Did the bigger card alleviate any of the problems with freeze frame?

davidwhitefield

ive never had much of that trouble with my smaller cards (sandisk mobile premier 2G) but at this moment in time the footage is up to its normal clarity and smoothness. i guess the fact that its a class 6 card can only make things better as the write speed is high enough for HD work with a contour. if i do run into any probs ill post asap , im in france again soon downhill racing in the alps were ill be using both a vholdr and a contour, so if there are any issues with the 8G card in the vholdr ill let you all know.

Waiting for my camera to arrive. Picked it up the other day at Amazon for a great price....$99.00!!
What SD card do you recommend purchasing? I will soon be making an extended trip by motorcycle so I will want to have some extras on hand. I've already got an extra battery and the charger.
Thanks.

We gave our VholdR it's first outing today.

It was on an optional vented helmet mount. We rode the Tandem MTB, and the stoker had it on her helmet.

Battery life was not an issue, but it appears card memory was.

About half a lap around a local trail the VholdR double beeped. Still trying to get all the beeps and steps learned I turned it off, then turned it back on and what I thought was continuing to record.

I did this based on the time frame this happened. No where near fifty minutes.

Got home, and imported the file, this took quite a while and was indicating 852mb and 15 minutes on the file.

Well sure enough when played, the point on the trail where it beeped must have been a full card.

Starting out the card was empty except for 1 of the VholdR files that came preloaded.

So how do we get the advertised time of 50 or so minutes/GB and what factors cut it down to 15minutes?

Any thoughts?

you will get less time on a card if the image is 'busy'. in other words alot of information coming on to the sensor so the amount of data being written is quite high.

you may get more out of the current card by formating it and make sure its formated in FAT32, otherwise get a sandisk premier 2G card or a sandisk ultra 4G card, ive found that the camera will write to the larger card but it will only record 2G files max.

personaly i have had nothing but good results from sandisk cards, the ultra is a class 6 and is compatible with the contour if you ever upgrade, also as the ultra has a higher write speed it will never miss anything.

hope this is of some help.

Just formatted my Sandisk 1GB Micro SD card from my Garmin. I had installed this for the earlier ride video. It seemed the format was 32 instead of FAT32.

Not sure this will make much difference, but time will tell.

In regards to using the larger cards...
Hypothetically, (since we are told nothing larger than 2GB), with these larger cards, does the unit record the 1.99MB then beep to stop recording as happened to us today.

Then what? Just start recording again and the camera will make a second 1.99MB file.

or do we need power down, reboot, then record again.

Thanks

Formatted card, and a different ride. This time it was a road ride just to be a test of something less dynamic than riding in the woods.

This time we got almost 55 minutes of video. So it will get the 1Gb/50min.

Maybe this weekend we can try it on the MTB again.

Now I need to learn some editing skills.

hi pmk,

the best way of getting the best out of a larger card is to get used to how long it takes to aquire a 2g file in different conditions, as a rule (if i remember that is!) i will quickly stop/start recording every half hour, this will split the files to make them more usable and you can then fill a larger card no probs with smaller files without having any probs. using this method it is possable to use the battery to its full and get the most footage in that period.

hope this helps :)

Dave.

Experience is indicating that as mentioned ambient conditions do seem to affect recording limits.

With experience you also get more familiar with using the camera.

I tried the larger card this past weekend, it didn't quite hit the limit of 186. If it's possible for the camera to work in a way to have it skip through the 2gb limit by making smaller segments, then I'll give it a go.

Thanks
PK
