Covers to protect the Camera

unixken

I use my cameras (both the ContourHD and the original), mounted to electronic headsets, while on the outdoor shooting range, to capture training sessions and IDPA scenarios, etc.

When occasional light rain/drizzle/dust, and so on kick up, I wanted an easy solution to protecting the camera without having to dismount the unit and put it in a case. I found the perfect answer at my local gun shop. "ScopeCoat" (scopecoat.com) makes neoprene "socks" that are designed to slip over a mounted rifle scope, or other such firearms optics. Rather than being open on the end, they have a slit along one side that allows the sock to cover the entire scope, while leaving access for the scope mounts to poke through the side. The ScopeCoat, in the model sized for an AIMPOINT Red-Dot, is perfect for the video cameras. It quickly slips over the whole camera, while it's still mounted. The ScopeCoat is easily stuffed in a pocket for ready access, and quickly covers the camera in the event of a sudden shower or dust storm. It's just enough protection to keep the camera clean and dry while you get out of the rain.

Secondly, if you're looking for a simple lens-cap type of solution, the gun shop comes through again. Butler Creek manufactures a line of slip-on, flip-up lens caps, designed to fit rifle scopes. Most gun shops carry them. The caps are sold individually, and come in sizes to fit just about any scope's objective or ocular lenses. They have spring-loaded hinges, and with a light press of a tab, the lens cap flips up and out of the way, revealing the lens. The "SIZE 03A, OBJ" (objective lens) cover fits the camera-head snugly (although the sleeve is about twice as deep as it needs to be - push it on too deeply, and you'll make it difficult to rotate the lens.) If you trim back the depth of the sleeve, the cap works more than adequately to keep the lens from getting scratched or covered by dust, when the camera is not stored in a case of some sort, but also not actively being used.

Unixken,

Try the O1 Eyepice from Butler creek. I found it just right that you dont have to trim it down and it adds the right amount of stiffness for keep the lens in place. Also with it being longer it adds a bit of protection at the rotation ring seal.

I discovered that a 35mm film canister lid makes the perfect lens cap for the camera. You need the black type canister with the grey lid - you slice out the inner rim on the inside of the lid and it fits the Contour perfectly.
