Editing VholdR Video in Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, and Final Cut

BholdR
For those of you that are interested in more editing options than the VholdR Desktop, we're providing the following tutorial which will guide you through importing and exporting your VholdR videos.

-----------------------------------
WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER
-----------------------------------

Importing:

The first thing you'll need to do is install a codec which will allow you to view the videos outside of the VholdR desktop.

Go to: http://sourceforge.net/project...

Download and install the latest version of ffdshow. This is a codec and filter pack that will allow VholdR videos to play on just about any application on your PC, including Windows Movie Maker.

Note: Sometimes upon first run, you will get a pop-up asking if it's ok to use ffdshow for this file type, select 'always use ffdshow' and continue.

Once you have ffdshow installed, open up Windows Movie Maker, go to the tools drop down menu and select options. on the 'compatibility' tab you should see some checkboxes about avi's and ffdshow, be sure those are checked. From there you should be able to import any VholdR video into Windows Movie Maker and view and edit them just like anything else.

Note: The default location for your VholdR videos is in a folder called 'VholdR videos' (go figure) located in 'my documents' or 'my documents/my videos' depending upon your version of Windows.

Exporting:

Once you've got your video all kitted out with special effects and such, then you'll probably want to export it back to your computer for posting on VholdR.com. To do so, simply select 'This computer' from the 'publish to' section of the left hand menu.

First name your masterpiece and then select 'browse' for the publish to location. Find your way to your vholdr videos folder (in my documents or my videos depending on OS). and select it, then click next. On the next screen select 'Best quality for playback on my computer' and publish.

Once that's done you can close Windows Movie Maker and then open the VholdR desktop. Your edited video will now appear your VholdR desktop library. From here you can, tag it, describe it, and share it with the world!!!

----------
iMOVIE
----------

Importing:

iMovie was really only made to work with camcorders so this one can be a little more tricky then the others.

To start you'll have to convert your files into .MOV's. This can be done in one of two ways:

Option 1: You'll need two things for this option but they are easy to get and easy to use. The first is Perian.

Go to: www.perian.org and Download the latest version.

When the dmg mounts you'll need to follow the instructions to install the preference pane. This is basically an add on to Quicktime that will help it view your VholdR videos.

Once you've got that installed you will be at the pay point. In order to convert your files to .MOV you'll need to purchase Quicktime Pro. Once you have, you can simple open a VholdR video, select 'export' from the 'file' drop-down menu and save it as a Quicktime movie.

When the file has converted and saved you can now open iMovie. From there select 'import movies' from the 'file' drop-down' menu and point it towards the movie you just exported in Quicktime.

From there your video should show up in iMovie and you should be good to go.

Option 2: You'll only need one program to do the conversion with this route but the first install can be a bit tricky. The conversion program is called FFMPEGX:

http://ffmpegX.com/download.ht...

IMPORTANT: Be sure to follow ALL of the instructions on the page. You must download the additional files prior to first run in order to make the program work. The link will walk you through the entire process.

Once you've got FFMPEGX installed properly then you can open it, drag and drop a VholdR video into the left hand side of the window, and then on the right hand pane select .mov from the list of extensions. Once it's selected, click the video tab and be sure to set the aspect ratio to 4:3. Finally, set the bit rate at about 2000 kbps and then click 'encode'.

When the file has converted and saved you can now open iMovie. From there select 'import movies' from the 'file' drop-down' menu and point it towards the movie you just exported in Quicktime. From there your video should show up in iMovie and you should be good to go.

Exporting:

When you're ready to export your edited video back into the VholdR desktop you will want to use the 'export using quicktime' option from the 'share' drop down menu. From there you can name your video, and then select where it will be saved. The easiest way to get the video back into your VholdR desktop will be to save in directly into the VholdR videos folder, located under your username/movies/VholdR.

You'll also need to click the options button a little bit further down. This will pop up a bunch of settings for your video, the only one you need to worry about is 'size'. Select size and change it to 640x480. Once you're done with that select save.

When your final is done rendering you're ready to open up the VholdR desktop. You should see your new video in there, ready to be tagged, titled, described, and shared with the world!

---------------
FINAL CUT
---------------

Importing:

In order to import into Final Cut you'll need to install a free program call Perian. Go to: www.perian.org and download the latest version. Once the dmg mounts follow the instructions to install the preference pane. Once you've got Perian installed you can import your files as normal and they will automatically convert when you start to edit them. Easy-peasy...

Exporting:

Export your videos as MOV's to: username/Movies/VholdR. Be sure to set your aspect ratio to 4:3 and your resolution to 640x480, then save the file.

When your final is done rendering you're ready to open up the VholdR desktop. You should see your new video in there, ready to be tagged, titled, described, and shared with the world!

To clarify, this post is intended for VholdR Videos only. It will not work for ContourHD videos.

Thanks,

After downloading Quicktrime Pro for $30. that runs the .mov perfectly, but can't save in the WMM format or w/o losing some of the quality, I downloaded Corel's Video Studio 12, Super, Vegas Movie Studio, and used their trial software. I either didn't like their interface or still had some problems. What I did find that could open the file perfectly, edit and save in numerous formats is a program called "Magix Movie Edit Pro 15" you can get a free trial. I like it and I ordered it from Amazon for $72.

What should I do to import movies from ContourHD into iMovie '09?

I tried to import the sample movies downloaded from your website and they work. But my movies won't import. I also tried to open in Quicktime and save as Quicktime independent movie, but nothing.

I have Quicktime Pro, and latest updates of iMovie and my MAC.

Thanks,

Marc.

Hi Nate,

Everything HD!

Two things:

1. Open a video with Quicktime, hit apple+i and give me the specs.
2. What does it say when you try to import it into iMovie?

Hi Marc,

Ok, so I took a look and with iMovie 09 I was able to import and export videos fairly easily (write-up forthcoming).

When I ran the import I did File/import/Movies and then selected "full size" with the optimize video box checked.

I would try making a really small file to see if that imports first, then work bigger. Maybe your Mac can't handle the file size? If so you can clip it into chunks in the Easy Edit software.

Also, make sure you don't have any other programs (like Quicktime) viewing the file in the background.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks,
Nate

I tried it on my computer and it didn't work.

But then I tried in another mac and it worked! So, It must be a problem with my installation, because the two computers have the same version of imovie 09.

Sorry for not trying it before posting, but apple programs normally don't fail like this! hehehe

thank you!

No problem, glad to see you've got it working. In the meantime I managed to write up an iMovie doc. I'll post it soon after I get it double checked for accuracy.

Has there been any progress with known software for Vista 64 bit to allow me to import edit and export with the VholdR sd camera, I am still unable to use or find any software that alows me to edit my videos. Any suggestions short of buying a pc with xp on it would be great.

Thanks

Fixdaily,

If you FFmpeg and make sure it's connected in the options on windows movie maker you should be able to import no problem.

I can watch my movies with Windows Media Player, but i can't use them in Windows Movie Maker..

Hi Gonriggen,

You will need the HD version of WMM which I believe only comes with certain flavors of Vista. Otherwise it will not work.

Thanks,
Nate

HD. Do you think FCP version 4.5 can read it?

Hey ccostantini,

HD should go straight in with no problems, maybe there's something wrong with that particular movie. Try taking a small test clip and dropping it in.

None of this is helping. Does -anyone- know of software I can use to edit my ContourHD videos, that -won't- cause my computer to drag to a crawl? I did several regular HD movies recently, but when trying to use Adobe Premiere Elements on them, it performs -so- slowly I cannot actually complete any operations! The movies -play- on my computer fine, but trying to edit them is an exercise in patience! This is a -3ghz- Pentium 4 chip with a Geforce 9800 GT -overclocked- video card, I can't see how this isn't powerful enough to edit video!

I'd love to use Windows Movie Maker, but the Contour outputs in .MOV files, which Movie Maker says of course, is an invalid format when trying to open them!

Okay! Wow. Um.. _TOTALLY IGNORE THAT COMMENT!_ And, as a note to everyone: DO NOT USE ADOBE SOFTWARE, unless you have a VERY powerful computer, and likely are a professional studio! Why do I say this? Their 'elements' software, the 'dumbed down, consumer level' edition? It's just as power-hungry as the full software! No changes to my hardware settings.. Adobe software -almost doesn't work-. Even -playing- HD videos back that work on my computer otherwise is stuttery, choppy.. just downright bad.

I tried a competing software pack, Cyberlink Powerdirector. Booted several times faster, and video playback was at least -smooth- and workable. Sure it doesn't look perfect in the preview window, but I can see what is what, and it -works-! Sure there's probably other packages as well that work, but clearly ADOBE DOES NOT, if you have a weak computer! Weak apparently meaning anything more than a year old! Just a heads up!

you will find that most hd stuff will slow down your pc due to the amount of data the files produce. also you might find that as youve only got a single core chip that it will restrict it a little, if you upgrade to a dual core it will all run smoother still, im running a intel core duo E8400@3Ghz, its quite cheep to buy and the difference is realy noticable, just make sure your motherboard can take it, and you might as well up the ram if you do upgrade as its a relative quick and cheep upgrade :-)
