Loose Contour on rail mounts

bikerjosh

Not sure if anyone else has this, but my camera seems to rattle on most of my mounts. The vented helmet mount is the worst. Camera is on, but there is a little give side to side, like the rails of the mounts are too small or the channels on the camera are too big. I've taken to putting a layer of electrical tape (thin mind you) over the rails to take up the extra space. Each time I need to redo the tape to keep it secure since removing it pulls the tape off.
Ideas?
Thanks Josh

Mine is exactly the same. I've got two Vholdrs that fit nice and snug onto all my mounts but my Contour really flops around on every single one, including the ones that came with the camera. Watching the videos is kinda nauseating with it jumping around. Any chance a bunch of rails were made wrong? The Contour rails are held on by philips screws but the Vholdr's have what look like tiny Torx screws holding them on and I don't have a bit that small to try swapping them. Anyone else have this problem?

I am having the same issue w/ the bike handlebar mount and the strap helmet mount. the video is unwatchable.

i am really disappointed with this, feels like a lack of QA on the backward compatibility with the existing accessories. the simplest thing really detracts from the potential of a great product.

Q, does your Contour fit tightly on the mounts that came with it? At first I thought they had somehow changed the design of the mounts but then realized that it fits poorly on every mount - including the ones that came in the box with it! I'm going to start this thread again in the ContourHD forum, I think that a lot of people with the same problem might not be looking in here.

Thanks Dave for posting it in the Contour Forum, I added my comments.

Yeah I just got mine and it's the same. I have a super sturdy mount on my motorcycle, but the free play in the rails leads to high freq. vibrations and "Jello's" my videos.. Going to try rubberbands to add some tension.

Dave,
the mounting disk that came w/ the camera seems a bit tighter but there is some play.. the stuff from the vented mount and bike mount are very loose. luckily the mounting "disks" is compatible w/ the bike mount but not the helmet...

I have two 2 mounts (flat) for the camera... The original and a replacement. Funny, the orig mount has the detent nib in the middle of the rail area. This one is TIGHT. The replacement mount has the detent nib off-center (about 2/3 down rail area). This mount is LOOSE and flops around. I would take a look at your flat mount and check this. There must have been two production runs/ molds which are not the same size or not to orig spec.

Another way I just tried.. get a thin piece of dark foam (thickness depends of softness) about 1/4". Cut it the same size as the round mount section. Cut a hole in middle for rail connections. Place over round mount and slide unto rail (sort of foam washer, under mount of course).
This fix looks fairly good and takes out some of the wobble/vibration at the mount to cam.

Having trouble picturing this can you attach a pic?
thanks Josh

I don't think you can attach a pic...
But think of it as a foam washer that goes between the top part of the flat mount and the rails...compress foam to slide on the rail...it takes out some of the wobble.

I have the same issue with my handlebar mount. It was rattling around, recording all the rattling noises, while the video was unwatchable.

Yesterday, I've also discovered that one side of the camera is looser than the other. My solution was, although ghetto, laying two layers of electrical tape just on the outside of the rail on the mount to fill the void between the camera and the mount. I think that I could also apply the tape on the camera itself instead.

After a two hour ride today (which the battery didn't last even an hour), I've concluded that the handlebar is not a good place for this camera for mountain biking (even with a secure mount), especially when on bumpy trails. It looks like a mix of Blair Witch Project and that blurry effect they used in Batman Returns.

Sorry. I meant Batman Begins.

when using the handlebar mount i found that by fitting the thinest rubber under the camera and finding some harder rubber to go on the opposite side it reduces the vibrations to nothing! also tightening up as tight as you dare helps :)

I just bought the Contour HD and am experiencing the same problem. This is a bunch of crap. So no response from VholdR on this forum about this?!?!?

they havent replyed yet as they are rather overwhelmed with the response that the contour has generated. email support and they will get back to you, it may take a while as they are in the process of training new staff to speed things up a bit.

i know it sucks that there isnt an imediate response to these things, but they sometimes will contact you direct via your account and sort things out from there.
yes it does seem that there have been more than their fair share of problems with this camera ,but they had a much larger run of these than when they launched the vholdr camera, so that there wasnt a huge waiting list for us.

your patience will be rewarded, and as they are a small company they will look after you. the level of assistance ive had over the last 18 months has been outstanding and even though im in the uk they have never let me down.

one of my mottos is " treat people how you would want to be treated!" trust me it works on all levels :)

I stuffed some more rubber between the handlebar and the mount. We'll see if this makes any difference. I feel a little tired to go for a ride though. :D

Here's my video showing the rattle due to the play in the camera and the handlebar mount. (Prior to my attempts to fix the play.)

Hey Guys,

I heard back from the dev. team. If you've got a camera/mount combo that is loose please contact support and send in both your camera and the mount. We'll need to get some of these units in here to assess the issue.

Thanks,
-Nate

Thanks, Nate! I replied to your post on the video I posted as well, but in case you don't see that....

Although having customer support involved would be nice, I wouldn't want to send my equipment away for such an issue. It's not like it doesn't work. Could I communicate with them for a resolution without sending my equipment in? I can take measurements with my feeler gauges and caliper, as well as take photos.

It's best if we can get it back so we can compare to a bunch of other stuff around here. But if you want to take some measurements (very optional) you can send them to me as a direct message.

Thanks,
Nate
