Hi,
Does anyone know a portable video player that accepts (micro) sd-cards and is able to play the videos recorded by VholdR?

I know the old archos av500 would accept a memory card reader via its USB adapter. Unfourtunatley i cannot test because mine crapped out on me!
This Archos 405 accepts SD-Microsd Cards, However whether or not it will play media directly from those cards you will have to findout.

The downfall to achros's product line now is that they are stripped down to keep the prices low. You will get a unit for cheap, but if you want to play certain codecs you will have to purchase them for around $40USD.
You can purchase USB Adapters which would allow you to attach your camera or MemoryCard reader to them & video out.
I use a Dell Axim x50v PDA to play videos when I need something mobile. I used TCPMP Core Media Player on it.
I also have PocketMap Navigator on this same PDA. So I've got a GPA/Video Player in the same device.
I could be wrong but doesn't the Sony PSP and iPhone also have SD Card slots? It's becoming a very popular format.
Thanks for your answers. I haven't been able to try the Archos yet, but the specs look promising. I know that the new Creative Zen players aren't capable of playing the movies. I tried those this week with no luck.
I tried TCPMP on my Palm Tungsten E2, but that didn't work. Maybe the Dell Axim is more powerful?
The iPhone doesn't have a SD Card Slot, but I came across another portbale player that might be interesting. It's the Onda VX787 and looks like an iPod Touch clone with SD Card Slot. According to the specs it should be able to play movies recorded whith the VholdR.
If I know more, I will post it here.
Please do!

Well, here is een update. It appears that the Onda isn't capable of playing the files. The problem is the bitrate of the file. The current chips in most portable players can't handle that.
A couple of days ago a new player was introduced: the Ainol V3000HD, which has a new chip and is able to play HD-quality movies. I just took a chance and ordered one today. I hope it will arrive soon (it has to fly from Hongkong to the Netherlands). It costed around $ 180,- delivery included.
When it arrives and when I have tested it, I will post the results.
Any news on this topic?
Thank you.
Sorry, could not find the other newer topics I found some days before :-(

has anyone tried archos 5 or archos 7?
it says in the manufacturers site that the hd plugin supports h.264 codec up to DVD resolution (720*576 I think)
damn MOV, I hate it :)
I have an archos 5 and 605. HD playback on the actual units screen does not work. It only supports 800 x 480 resolution. HD plugin is for playback to an external source, so if you hook it up to a tv it will play back the files then.
Im gutted, as i cant find any small device capable of playing them back.
I am considering buying a netbook just for this reason.
Is you Archos 5 the older Linux version or the updated Archos 5 Internet Tablet running on Android platform? I believe the Android version should be able to play 720p but I'm not sure...
hmm i see that...
it's no good for me as it's not a portable solution.
sianabanana you are thinking just the way I am :)
just for this reason I am looking at those sloppy netbooks I have never thought of before :)
I have also been looking for a portable player, at least to check the camera angle.
Things I have tried that won't play the files at all:
Archos 605
Epson P-3000
I have a Samsung NC20 Netbook that can open the .mov files, but playback is horribly choppy. It works to check the framing, though.
Has anyone else found something that works?
Hi has anyone mentioned that you might be able to use a hacked psp to play back videos with the sd adapter
---
I just tried the Micro SD card in an SD adapter and put it in my Epson P2000. It recognised the card and files, I copied it to the internal hard drive no problems. Unfortunately, the Epson P-2000 will NOT play the Contour HD files at all. Max supported resolution is 640x480. :(

I received my 1080p Vholdr this week and did some testing. I have a media player at home connected to my TV. It's a real small, light device and called Xtreamer (www.xtreamer.net). I put the micro SD card in an USB-adapter and succesfully played the video on my TV. For my next skitrip that will do, because there will be a TV in the appartment.
This might be an option for others as well.
Now if someone know a solution to change camera settings while skiing (some software on a small device like a smartphone or something) then I will be very happy. I didn't find a solution for that yet.
im looking into an archos 9 pc tablet at the moment as its quite small and might be the answer?
what do you recon??

I took a short look at the archos 9 and have to say that it looks very promising. I don't know if it's small enough to carry in the pocket of my jacket, but I will take a closer look if I see it in a shop.
Because it runs on Windows 7, you can probably work with the Easy Edit software. So, no need to carry a laptop with you.
ive sent an email to the uk distributers with a few questions and im waiting for a reply from them (they're only 15 miles away from me) as soon as they've replyed ill post up the response. size wise its not too bad 10"x5"x5/8" or 256x134x17mm roughly about the same sixe as a peice of A5 paper, but a bit thicker :-) so its a back pack size to keep it safe realy, unless youve got BIG pockets ;-)
right ive just had word back from archos and all you have to do is down load quicktime and hey presto you can view the files!!! so that means you can also put easy edit on it so you can adjust the 1080,woo hoo! :-)
three guesses what im asking santa for this year ;-)
CF-30 toughbook, all the way. Fully rugged badboy. Simple 12" touchscreen, all water resistant whilst ports closed.
www.filehippo.com Grab VLC media player or quicktime alternative. Good site for mostly free software thats been checked.

yeah thats a good one at 3k its a bit more than the £450 for the archos 9 !!!!!
I even tried looking for software that will play quicktime on my phone..... :( not happening. I really liked the idea of being able to check alignment whilst I am out on the snow rather than getting back at the end of the day to find out the angle was off.
The VPD400 from viewsonic plays the cam files from my contourHD via the microSD card
Yeah I noticed another post onthe VPD400. Looks like a Xmas present for myself. :)
I looked at the specs of the VPD400 and it says that it plays video up to 720p. Did you try it with 1080p videos?
take a look here:
