Tagging Recipe

NholdRNholdR here,

This is a post from the support page, that I'm reposting here in case there are any questions you'd all like to discuss.

We’re getting more and more great videos submitted to the site everyday, which is great, but all this footage can come at a price of making it harder to find just what you want to watch.

That’s where tags come in…

I know it seems like we beat this issue like a dead horse but I promise you there’s a good reason for it. Think about it, it seems like a pain to enter all that information for each or your videos – even though we work hard to streamline that process – but on the flipside, when you’re kicked back watching videos on the site, how great is it to find a bunch of great videos in a row?

So, how can we help to simplify the tagging process even more? A simple template perhaps? I’ll outline the 5 tag types that will get you 80% of the way.

Before we hit the tag types though, we’ll start with a couple of rules of thumb when deciding on your tags.

  • Use simple words as they are the easiest for others to recognize, search, and use in their own videos.
  • Follow the pack, if you’re unsure about a certain set of words, you can always search the site to see which is most popular, or better yet, just put all of them!
  • SEPARATE YOUR TAGS WITH COMMAS!!!

Tag 1

The activity: Think as broadly and simply as possible here, we just want a tag that will put you in a major category. The most popular and best examples:

  • Ski, mtb, dirt bike, motorcycle, ATV, snowboarding, etc…

Tag 2

The action: Again stay pretty broad here. Try to put in one or a few basic words that describe what you are doing. This will give a potential viewer the ability to find to based on what’s going on in the video and not just what type of sport it is. The most popular and best examples:

  • Crash, jump, race, cruising, skydive, (this could double for tag 1 as well because in this case the sport is the action). Etc…

Tag 3

The type: The type tag is where you can really drill down a bit. In this case we’re looking for a descriptor that will give the viewer some idea of what to expect when watching your video. The most popular and best examples:

  • Funny, fast, pain, short, montage, long, angle, etc…

Tag 4

The location descriptor: Obviously we love location, but you can improve on the map by giving one or two terms that will give the viewer a good idea of what kind of view they are about to see. The most popular and best examples:

  • Singletrack, course, desert, trail, freeway, snow, alpine, etc…

Tag 5

The detail: This tag is for those looking for something more specific. It will help you and others like you find common ground based upon some similar aspect of your adventure. These tags tend to have less numbers but very high value for someone looking for them. Instead of listing specifics I’ll give you some ideas:

  • Name of your major piece of equipment (motorcycle, car, bike, skis, snowboard, ATV, sled, etc)
  • Name of the run.
  • Name of the type of trick.
  • Name of your group, club, or association.

So there you have it, a short guide that should help you get great tags on all of your videos. Also, keep in mind that this list is more of a minimum and by no means a maximum, feel free to put in as many tags as you think are helpful.
