Wind noise reduced by 60% or more

Hauks

Just got the HD in yesterday and immediately noticed the wind noise problem. Searched and read all the w/noise threads so i took the mod leap.

I removed the mic and then the rubber housing around it (which i think is the whole reason it is so sensitive) took a peice of soft foam from our shop, cut a hole, stuck the mic in it and taped up the back end so none of the mic was exposed. put it back into the original slot and i was done.

im stupid for not taking pics but i am thinking of taking it apart to do a "How to" thread. It works awsome now, we turn the shop fan on full blast and now its just a tiny muffled noise. normal sounds are now heard over the fan.

PS: Im at work and cant post vids, i do have the before and after. Ill be home in couple weeks and ill thow them up.

- I think the wind is comming through the front LED, it is right in front of the mic.

or since its wedged in the camera the whole unit becoms the mic.

Any progress on the video? Or pics?

So you basically replaced the existing rubber surround on the mic with foam. So is this neoprene or is this like the high-density rubber foam? I haven't taken apart my camera, so can't relate to "taped up the back end so none of the mic was exposed"... I suppose when I take the camera apart, I'll get a better picture.

In any case, post some pics. Thanks!

swix,

its not neoprene or high density foam. just a cheap peice of foam from a office chair about 1/4" thick.

when i inserted the mic into the foam the back of the mic was exposed so i made sure the whole mic was surrounded in foam, need tape to keep it closed.

Hauks - thanks for the reply. I finally took my vholdr apart and understand what you're talking about. So basically put the mic into a piece of foam without the rubber spacer/ring and put it back in its place. Nice!... an internal windscreen.

I think I'm going the external mic route... waiting for my 2.5mm jack to determine if I can mod it into the camera. If not then I'll use a wired jack. Found some raw Panasonic SW61a mics which I'll wire up with a 2.5mm plug. I can then have "fixed" mics in proper locations of my helmets and car... just plug into the camera.

I've been having a think about what foam to use for this...and it occurred to me that earplug foam would be ideal for this...the bikers here will be familiar with it and for those that aren't - they're cheap and easy to purchase.

Great idea, simple fix
Kind of surprised the vholdr guys haven't done this by default .... it's probably the most-commented negatives and easy workaround.
Thinking of making a faux-fur windcutter for mine ......

Hi Hauks, very nice improvement, congratulations. Ski season is starting, I have just received my ContourHP 1080p and it would be lovely to see your pics so we can do it on our own equipment.
I wonder if you have already upload them to same place?
Cheers,
Gi

If Hauks hasn't, I am doing the mod to my ContourHD tonight after work. I will photograph the whole process and add instructions.
