VholdR video freeze, stop, audio only. [F.A.Q.]
We are aware that some people are experiencing freezing and badly glitched video playback issues.
I am suffering the freezing video and audio 'machine-gunning'. It is my first outing with the camera. I shot 5 video clips. 2 of them run OK, sound and visual, the other 3 have the above problems. Is this likely to be a warranty issue or a card problem? Camera No. 0608006381.

try a different card. what card are you using now? if its a sandisk premier you shouldnt have any probs.
I would encourage you to email support@vholdr.com like NholdR suggested if you are continuing to have a similar experiences.
Hmm looks like I have been hit with the bug again!
http://vholdr.com/node/7238 - Video still processing
My video Freezes every 10 seconds, goes, freezes, goes, it is almost on a schedule.
I am on a 4mb/s card I believe, so i guess it is related to the dumping of information off the card.
What is very weird is that my card is full to 1.85GB (2.0gb on disK)
Yet the summed time of the video are are about 45min. Which is about 1 hour short of the time vholdr says it can do.
I cannot find any Sandisk Premier anywhere locally, only online, even then it is vague as to the model numbers & speeds.
Helmetcamera Central has MaxFlash 2GB 60x Models - http://shop.helmetcameracentra...
If they are on the site they must work?
the sandisk premier records at 9mb/s so is theoreticaly able to record twice as much info as your current one, as for the video only being 45 mins with 1.85g that sounds about right if you are in an enviroment with a lot going on,such as at speed and/or a 'busy' background. if you just stand your camera on a window facing outside and record, you can get over two hours of footage(but it will be very boring!) on the other hand, on the side of your lid gunning it through trees you will only get 3/4 hour because the camera is trying to take it all in and the card will be trying to keep up the best it can this will be why your current card is playing up coz it just cant handle it, go with the sandisk if you can as they have a 10 year warranty with them. the sandisk premier 2g is 'the one to use' in my humble opinion, and with a little searching on line you can get them very cheep, the place i get them from in the uk here has them at £7.49 with free delivery where as localy ive seen them for around £29.99 on average!! 4 for the price of 1 , and i know that they work, yes they will only hold around 1.85g (something to do with software i believe), like a 250g usb hard drive only having 233g of available storage space, but what do i know im just a consumer ;)
Hey Nate,
I've been using my unit on and off since September. Yesterday it started "Machine gunning". It has done it through three vids now. I don't remove the card or battery and always download my clips before viewing. I'm still using the card I got with the unit - is a differne card the only option?.... Man that wind noise is a bummer! Can't you develop an option to manage the mic sensitivity through the desktop?
Regards
Tex
I put a Sandisk Premium card (2gb) in this morning - a few tests later and all looks good. Proper test on Sunday with full on ride planned - I'll let you know how it goes...
Tex
stay away from kingston cards! theyre a good price but frankly ive found them to be 'kin rubbish. the reason is the low write speed, all the footage i shot to start with was ok but after the first download the videos all reacted like an caffine fueled 1 year old with a rattle! since then ive only used the sandisk premiers the first two have lasted 6 months before they started to show signs of wear (this reveled itself as slight pixilation in grey or green only in shadows in high contrast shots) i now keep them as back up and ive got 2 new ones and they only cost about £8 each from an online supplier. as for the kingston card i started with it now lives in my sons phone.
Thanks for the info. I'll give the sandisk premier card a shot. Happy shooting.
i'm waiting now for a 2GB sandisk premier...let's try a see what happens. I will let you know.
The Kingston card worked MUCH better than the card included with the camera. There is still some pixelation and a few moments where it locks up. I did order a sanddisk premier card. Will report back once I have a chance to use it.
45 minutes of video, 8 diferent clips (longest 23mins)busy stuff - the GPS said maximum speed 127klm/hr in forest, single track etc - all good - no machine gunning. Looks like Sandisk is the go!
Hey guys,
As NholdR has suggested, along with others, we do recommend cards with faster write speeds like the SanDisk Premier. If you are seeing problems please send me a message and we will help you with this.
Thanks!
it run great for several months on sandisk Ultra II 2G card, but last Saturday i've recorded 20 minutes video (~1G size)
and it went very bad. many stucks, freezes, gray dots and jumps, machine gun noise when stuck.
I tried with several players (including VLC) and PCs with no change.
so i've did a full card format (slow format) and it's looking like it went ok again now.
have you looked in the possibility of card fragmentation/soft corruption?
i've done 500 MB recording with no stuck now.
im having the same problems, freeze frames and just sound.is there a firmware upgrade?
Depending on your specific camera, there may be a new firmware upgrade available, however each case is different and the firmware may not benefit your camera. We encourage this to be handled by individual cases by emailing to support@vholdr.com.
Thanks!
I've shot a total of five videos. Overall impressed with the transition of light to shaded resolution bombing trees. I notice though that every 15-20 seconds the video playback freezes for a second or two then starts again. This after the videos have been downloaded off the camera and I'm playing them back ober my computer. Is this the same issue everyone is having? THe camera is 2 weeks old and I want to make sure it's working before I throw in the towel and send it back to REI.
thanks Josh
this sounds more like a computer related if its a regular thing, what is the spec of your pc? if you havent got a lot of ram it can do this, it may be also codec related or even a slow processor. theres a few things to check before throwing in the towel.
the latest version of the software on the desk top was designed for dual core processors, it didnt cause a prob on my old pc but its a lot smoother on my new one.
Thanks David I'll try it on my new laptop.
Unrelated to this camera, when I look at the footage from POV 1.5 cameras it isn't a great improvemnet over the this one. Somehow I thought if you spent twice as much it would be better. Glad I went with the vholdr in that respect.
Well... got my vHoldR and the first time I used it, quess what?
machine gunning. Twice in the first 15 minutes. Video and audio quality not very good either. I am not sure what to think... I am using the card which came with my camera and we are being told to get a different card? Shouldn't I have gotten a card which works with the camera in the first place?
I love the physical design of the camera but there obviously some issues which have not been worked out.
I was considering the vHoldrHD but decided to try the vholdr first... and based on my experience so far I am not sure how I feel about that idea...
So I've read the whole thread. What is the final solution? A different card or a different camera?
Forgot to add... you guys are saying we will get 2 hours of video on a 2GB card. I find that to be impossible since I only got 25 minutes from 950MB of video.
I did reformat the card (through usb) and did not get any machine gunning on the last video.
FOR flgliderpilot!
I tried to PM you, but it says you do not accept PM's..sorry for the off topic.
I saw your username and am curious what you fly? I recently returned to gliders after more then a 10 year break. I flew solo in a blanik L-13 for about 5 years but never took my test. I recently returned to get back to solo and I am flying a G103 twin acro 2 which I really disslike. It feels heavy in the air and the controll harmony is horrible.
I also fly hnagliders, but I am between Hang 1 and Hang 2 at the moment. I am about 3 beach lessons from Solo.

Before getting the chance to purchase the ContourHD, I bought a VholdR about 3 weeks ago (more so because CountourHDs are back-ordered for quite sometime). After some wait to get the handle bar mounts for my bike for this camera, universal mount, and 2 2GB Kingston microSD, I finally shot a video 2 evenings ago. Well, right off the bat I was so disappointed. I got so much pixelation, especially, on the shades of gray (from evening/overcast skies). However, there was no audio freezing for me.
.
I wasn't sure if it was just the camera issue then I found this thread discussing pixelation.
.
The SD cards are brand new and properly formatted. As suggested in this thread to use memory with faster read & write speeds, I am disappointed for why Twenty20, Inc. is not adding it to the specifications (on the package) or packing one along with the camera. If camera hardware requires a faster write speed memory card, then the company should provide one. I could not find any Sandisk Premier 2Gb SDs around, and would have to order them online, adding to the wait time.
.
I have 4 & 8 Gb SDHC but the camera don't seem to respond if I place an HC card in. I know some VholdR users have been successful in using 4 & 8 Gb cards, but I could not. Perhaps, I would need a firmware upgrade, which I also understand is not available. But I don't know, at this time I'm feeling like a sucker who has invested too much in VholdR in a hope to upgrade to contourHD later (2 spare batteries, mounts, extra car/wall charger, memory cards).
.
I'm still hunting for the 2GB SD with faster read-write rates. If I can't find one around then I'll order online. Frankly, I don't want to just keep adding to the expense more than I have already done. This type of memory should have been provided by Twenty20 in first place (or at least, listed in the specs list on the box). *sigh*
make sure that the 4g and 8g cards are formated in fat32 and they should work, as for the kingston cards they are not the best for this application. you will get a better deal shoping for cards online but please dont get them from ebay as some of them on there are cheeep ripoffs and its not worth the saving in the long run. sandisk also produce a 2g ultra card which is a class 6 card and should work fine in the vholdr,
hope this helps :)
I got my VHOLDR Friday October 2nd,no probs.,so far.I clipped tha round rail thingy( one inside hat and other outside of hat) between tha fabric on my baseball cap.I got tha safety thingy attached to VHOLDR so if it did pop off I wont loss my VHOLDR.So I can use a higher micro SD card as long as tha card is formatted in fat32.??I thought 2gb micro SD wuz tha limit?

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
yeah thats right.
it will only record a file thats 1.99G in size but i found that my sandisk ultra2 cards that i use in my contour will also work in my vholdr, so you could record 4 big files on a 8G card but you would have to stop recording at the 1.99G size (which i found to be aound 45 mins on a mtb) or you could record for 30 mins stop recording and then restart for another 30 mins. if you do try it out try and get class 6 cards, then if you upgrade to a contour in the future you can use them in that.
Dave.

Very useful info Dave. Thanks for tha headz up.I'm gonna give it a shot like you sugested.

Newbie - Can't find any video files on my SD card

Hi - newbie question here?
I've managed to create a partition on my 2Gb SD card using cpl>adminTools>computerManagement>DiskManagement, so have now got a FAT32 formatted 1.84gig drive.
are the files there in easy edit? if so...... open the start bar and select 'control panel', open 'folder options' and then select 'view'. where it says 'advance settings' you will find "hidden files and folders" make sure that 'show hidden files and folders' is highlighted , click on apply and then you should be able to find the files, although they shouldnt be hidden in the first place. now if that doesnt make any difference, try a right clck on the drive in 'my computer' and format the card that way. i know it shouldnt make any odds but you know what these computers are like ;-)
out of curiosity what os are you using? i foolishly assume that your on a windows os that is.....

Cards won't format or erase

None of my 4 cards will erase or re format. They all say write protected. Two of them I bought across the counter. How do I remove the write protection so I can delete and add videos?I use a card adapter
i know it sounds daft but try another usb port, ive found that if you use one more than others the computer gets the hump and wont play. do you use an SD card adaptor? if so it might have the little switch on the side that puts the write protect on the card, just switch it the other way and you should be away :-)
---
Liek Davidwhitefield says, some SD cards have write protection switches on them (these are adapters for microsd)

Double check & see if that is the problem.
Try and format the card when putting the card into the camera that way, it will popup as an external drive in your windows explorer (windows) or disk viewer on mac

burn footage to dvd or cd

Can anyone tellme how to put the footage on cd/dvd. Im new at this. thanks
PC or mac? Mac you can use iMovie.
PC you wil need to download some trial software such as Nero or roxio.
It will take you quite some time to render and burn. 3-8 hours.
DVD is reccomended (4.8GB) Dual Layer are about 15$ a pop but are 12GB or more.
I had the same question as schweiky, I also own a mac and a normal computer..... I was looking at iMovie for the OSX, you have to buy iLife which costs $80 bucks.... But after doing some investigation, I don't think iMovie supports .MOV files......
So then I looked at Nero and Roxio they are also $80 bucks. but I don't see anywhere on thier website that says it supports .MOV files either... before i dump $80 bucks on some software to make dvd's of my video's I want to make sure it will work for me.
I just came across this piece of software...
AVS Video Editor
http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Vid...
It supports a bunch of types of files including .MOV files and you can edit your videos with it and burn it to a dvd.

Wireless broadcast from vholdr

How cool would it be
to plug a wireless USB adapter in the back of the vholdr
and stream live from it.
There are some tiny linux distros that could do this.
